Velocity Magnetic Rower Review

The Velocity Exercise Magnetic Rower is one of the mid-range magnetic rowing machines which was chosen to bought by many people. The brand is important, and to have a name in this market, you need to come with good and reliable products. Besides rowing machines, they have a complete range of equipment that is created by them, like Stationary Bikes and Ellipticals.

Another aspect that was taken into consideration was the Customer Service and Warranty, which both are what you are expecting from someone that wants to represent something on the market.

As the Velocity Exercise Magnetic Rower has a good rate of sale, we will present the reasons why this rowing was bought by many users. Let’s jump into the story and make your impression.

Delivery and Assembly

The package that will deliver it will weight a total of 89 pounds. Isn’t that heavy, but if you need a friend help to carry it into the house it will be great.

After you start to unpack the box, first you will need to check if all components are in one piece. Being heavy, it might have a bumpy road until you receive it and the components can be damaged.

If this happened and you discover some damage to the rowing machine pieces you will call Customer Service. And this is what we liked, you will see that they will help you to change that damaged component.

Yes, it is not pleasant to find that you need to replace a piece and you will need to wait and to change a part, but at least you will have all the support you need to do this.

Ok, now that you have unboxed the rowing machine is time to put it together. As you will see that there are not too many pieces that need to be assembled. Also, the package contains the tools needed to assemble the rowing machine. This makes the all process to be easier than expected.

There are only 6 easy steps that you will follow, starting by attaching the front stabilizer to the mainframe, the mainframe to the gliding rail and finally the seat and footrests and rear stabilizer. The all process should not take more than 20 minutes and you can do it by yourself. If for other rowing machines, you will need a second person to help you, for this one is not the case.

The Velocity Exercise Magnetic Rower footprint is 80.3″ x 20.1″ x 25.2″ (L x W x H). The size of it isn’t comparable with the one the Concept2 machine has, occupying less space in any room you want to have it. This is letting you choose where you want to train. You don’t really need to have a garage for this machine, you just can put it next to your couch.

Now that the training is over you might want to fold it because this is a feature. It can be folded vertically and to do this is easy. All you need to do is to remove the safety knob that is on the gliding rail, fold the seat rail upright, and reinsert the knob back in place. That simple.

You can now move it and store where you have a place for it.
If you are worried about the possibility to see scratches on the floor, usually this should not happen.

As the machine remains very stable in intense workouts, there should not be any scratches on the floor. But to be on the safer side you can put a mat under it to prevent issues.

The Velocity Exercise Magnetic Rower, as the name is saying, is using a magnetic resistance system. As you may know, most of the rowing machines are using air or magnetic resistance and the difference between is that the air system is variable and magnetic one is adjustable.

The variable system means that the resistance is given by how hard you are pulling and the adjustable resistance is created by a system with magnets.

This rowing machine is using a Drum Magnetic Control (DMC) to control the resistance. What is happening, is that the flywheel is made out of metal and the magnets are used to break.

To create the resistance, the flywheel is actioned when the handle is pulled and the magnets that are placed near the wheel are moved closer or further from it. When the magnets are closer to the wheel the resistance is increased and when the magnets are farther, the resistance is decreased.

See how DMC works

One of the main advantages of magnetic resistance is noise. This kind of machine can let you train without disturbing your neighbors, your kids. The rowing machine is very quiet because the flywheel doesn’t act like a fan in the case of an air rowing machine. There is no friction to create noises, making this type of rowing machine great for apartments.

Another benefit of a magnetic rowing machine is that you can adjust your resistance based on your fitness level. Also, the resistance can be adjusted based on the training type you want to follow, like Steady Rowing, that is the best choice to start with, or Time Trial workouts, which is good to measure your progress.

Having the option to choose how hard it will be your workout, leaves you with a multitude of options at your disposal. And beside this, the rowing machine can be used by anyone in your family.

The negative comments about magnetic resistance are that this doesn’t mimic the natural resistance felt when you are rowing on water. This is happening because the resistance level remains the same no matter how hard or how slow you are pulling. To change the resistance you need to pull a button, not to increase or decrease your rowing pace.

Not miming the water resistance, the magnetic rowers don’t deal well with High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). To do HIIT you need to be able to go as hard as you can for a given interval and after that to have a cooling interval where the resistance is as low as possible.

But this not the case for the Velocity Exercise Magnetic rowing machine, where you will find a program that is created especially for Interval workouts. We will talk more about it in the Control Panel section.

Another thing to mention here is that the Velocity Exercise is that you need to plug it into an outlet. Because the resistance is controlled electronically the rowing machine must have access to an outlet.

Using LifeSpan RW 1000 magnetic rower

Maybe is not that stylish as other machines in the mid-budget range, but it is really what you need. As we talked early, the materials are very good, the machine looks and feels sturdy. It doesn’t squeak or move in high pace workouts and the glide is feeling very smooth.
Let’s break it in pieces and see what the rower has to offer.

Velocity is recommended for the high weight capacity for this rower to be 275lbs. There were users that their weight was above this limit and used the machine without any problem. We think that you are close to this weight limit you can train normally, without any issues.

About the height limit, there are no specifications, but the seat rail is long enough to accommodate almost any inseam length.

For a user to see if he/she fits into the rowing machine, the height is not the accurate method to measure, the inseam is what matters. If your height 6’4″ and have an average inseam, the rowing machine is suitable for you.

Resistance Levels

The Velocity Exercise Magnetic Rower has 8 levels of adjustable resistance. Starting from level 1, which is the lowest, up to level 8, which is the highest resistance level. Having these many levels, make the rowing machine suitable for everyone without taking into consideration age or fitness level.

The resistance levels are controlled from the main monitor and can be changed by pressing the up or down keys. We will show you how to do it in a short time.

Also, this machine offers 12 workout programs from where to choose. The pre-set programs will help you a lot if you are a beginner user of a rowing machine, by giving you the chance to know at what fitness level you are. By discovering where you are, you can easily choose your goal and how to obtain it.

Overall the resistance of this magnetic rowing machine is great for all users, even if you are a beginner or you are at a high fitness level.

The resistance mechanism makes this rowing machine to be as quiet as possible, maybe one of the quietest machines at this price range. Maybe, the only sound that will be heard is the seat gliding on the rail forward and backward.

This is making it perfect when you want to watch TV without disturbing anyone or to listen to your podcast.

The seat of Velocity Exercise Magnetic Rower is larger than many other rowing machines and made of polyurethane leather. It is not the most comfortable seat that we have tried, but it has a good built to take the lower backpressure.

When you are pivoting during a stroke, the seat doesn’t run from under your butt even in high pace training.

Overall we can say that this is a good fair seat that will support you in long workouts without creating discomfort or pain.

Handle and Footrest

Velocity Magnetic Rower Handle & footrest

The handlebar of this rowing machine is straight and is padded to avoid the need to use gym gloves. This will help you in extended workouts when your hands start to sweat and the friction between your palm and handle can hurt you.

The position of the handlebar is high enough on the mainframe. This is good because it will not bother you when your stroke is in the “Finish” position.

The footrests are big enough to accommodate all sizes and have non-slippery material. It is a solid material that will keep your shoes in place. Plus, on the base of the footrest, you will find heels guards, this is to prevent the feet to slip during the time of a stroke.

Footrests are not fixed, there are pivoting. Maybe some beginner users will find some discomfort at first, but in time they will get used to it and it will appreciate the flow of the entire stroke.

Control Panel

The Velocity rowing machine is equipped with a really good monitor for a mid-range budget rowing machine. It displays all the necessary data and it has 5 multifunction buttons.

You can follow on the monitor the following stats :

  • Time
  • Count
  • Distance (in km)
  • Calories
  • Strokes per minute
  • Watts
  • Pulse

The monitor starts at the moment when you start rowing, by activating his sensor. You will start to see it a little graph that is showing the evolution of a workout.

To reset, press the START/STOP/RESET button for 1 minute to reset all the values back to 0.

As we said, this is a good monitor with a big display and back-lit, all the data can be seen easily while rowing, even in dim light. Besides the raw data about time, count, distance, the Control Panel can be configured to train in a target time, or the number of counts.

Yeah, and the Control Panel will do a beep when your configured training is done. So, start to row and wait for the beep 🙂

The monitor comes with 12 workout programs from where you can choose. The 12 are divided in the following way

  • The first 6 are pre-programmed workouts, where you can choose between “hill”, “mountain”, and “interval” workout. Here the rowing resistance will auto-adjust, depending on the program mode
  • 1 workout that is for target heart rate program, this is based on your desired target heart rate
  • 4 slots where you can create your personal workouts. Here you can create different pieces of training and save in the Monitor memory. Or if there are multiple users that use the rowing machine, by having these 4 slots is a good way to share the rowing machine, by everyone to have his/her workout saved
  • 1 slot where you can row however you want, how long and what will be the pace is the one that you decide. Free rowing.

The rowing machine is also equipped with a heart rate strap and we see this as a big thumb up. By having a heart rate monitor you can track your training very accurate, especially you can count the calories that are burned.

To have a precise calories counter you will need to set age, sex, height, and weight. Based on these values and the progress of your heart rate during training, the calorie counter will be extremely accurate.

Another function that the Velocity Control Panel has it the ‘pulse recovery’, with a separate button on the monitor. You can press this button immediately after you finish your workout and you can check your pulse recovery rate.

You must know that this Control Panel doesn’t need extra batteries to work, you just plug the rowing machine into an outlet and that’s it. The downside of this is in case that the Control Panel is not working properly or malfunctioning the rowing machine will not work.

Nevertheless, this issue can be solved really easy, by contacting Cap Barbell customer service and troubleshoot or replace the Monitor.

A last word

Also, as not everything is pink, the points where they do not excel is at Customer Service and a short warranty period.
